About the Host Organisation

In 2012, People for Successful Corean REunification (PSCORE) was granted a special consultative status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and to this day, remains the only North Korean human rights advocacy NGO in South Korea to hold this status. Ever since, PSCORE has been actively participating in UN conferences, such as the annual sessions held by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

About the Model United Nations for Successful Corean Reunification (MUNSCR)

In order to give students the opportunity to simultaneously educate themselves on Korean reunification and the North Korean egregious human rights situation, and acquaint themselves with how the United Nations operates, PSCORE is hosting the Model United Nations for Successful Corean Reunification (MUNSCR).

The MUNSCR is an educational simulation of the United Nations taking place online since 2021. PSCORE aims to both educate and empower passionate youths all over the world. To uphold this ambition, the organisation has decided to establish a student-centred Organising Committee for MUNSCR.

The conference aims to serve as a global platform where aspiring activists, diplomats and leaders, from both Korean and international backgrounds, assemble to discuss:

Encourage peaceful dialogue on the reunification of the Korean peninsula;
Call for human rights improvement in North Korea.

Participants, also known as delegates, will each represent a member state of the United Nations correlated to North Korea. Then, they will be placed into committees – each committee focusing on a certain topic related to North Korean human rights or Korean reunification. Before attending the conference in April, delegates will be asked to conduct thorough research on the topics they are assigned, and draft position papers, formulate policy proposals, and familiarise themselves with the rules of procedure.

By means of the MUNSCR, PSCORE aims to spark an interest in, and extensively inform future world leaders about, the human rights situation in North Korea, and support a peaceful approach to reunification talks between the two Koreas. The conference also provide participants with the opportunity to develop and improve public speaking, writing and research skills; three competencies students require for a future career in international affairs.

Organizational Structure of MUNSCR

MUNSCR 2021

In the first MUNSCR, held in 2021, two committees were convened for planning purposes: The Organizing Committee (OC) and the Arrangement Committee (AC). While OC prepared a competition framework such as the structure and members of the competition, AC was mainly responsible for recruiting and training members (participants). We have only updated information on the first MUNSCR conference since it was the only conference held in English. Please refer to the following for details of each committee:

Organising Committee (OC)

The Organising Committee has seven main duties:

Deciding upon the organisational and leadership structure of the conference
Recruiting the Arrangement Committee (AC), Chairs and delegates
Producing and disseminating promotional materials alongside the AC
Creating guidelines for participants
Assigning countries, committees and topics
Arranging where and when the conference is to take place
Monitoring the conference in April

Arrangement Committee (AC)

The Arrangement Committee is divided into two groups:

Administration Team
Promotion Team

The Administration Team is responsible for:

Creating documents required for the conference
Assisting the Chair and Delegate Recruitment
Managing technology for the conference through Zoom

The Promotion Team is responsible for:

Creating contents and promoting them through the official MUNSCR website, social media platforms and other community websites
Raising awareness of the objectives of PSCORE and MUNSCR
Contributing to the making of promotional videos

Chairs

The Chairs are the head of each committee, and each committee will have one Main Chair and Co-Chair. They have three main duties:

Producing research reports on the topics they are assigned
Monitoring discussions among delegates and keeping the debate to time
Strictly ensuring that delegates adhere to rules and regulations throughout the debate

Delegates

Delegates are the participants that represent an individual country in each committee and will aim to work as diplomatic individuals under each Committee Chair.

Before the conference, they will be responsible for:

1. Conducting research on the topic they are assigned, the background of the country they have been assigned, the policies of their country on the topics they are given, and the policies of other countries so they can anticipate arguments raised by others
2. Drafting position papers

During the conference, delegates will be asked to:

1. Debate on certain motions raised during the moderated caucus, lobby during the unmoderated caucus, engage and collaborate with other delegates, actively participate in documenting a working paper, and produce a final resolution draft. caucus
